Intro to my future crime/romance novel about how I become an instrumental player in the hegemonic shift from late- to post-capitalist society

As people were rioting across the nation and the world, I was preparing the photo album that would present us as a couple with a relationship strong enough to justify immigration. By now the protests had spread to most major US cities and the state had started to respond with force; just two days before our interview the Oakland police threw tear gas grenades and fired rubber bullets at peaceful protesters. But every instance of police brutality served the marketing of the occupiers  - the larger the force, the stronger the comeback. The world was burning and here we were, adjusting our life to fit the frame of an inadequate immigration system. Oh how I wished I could be out there in the streets and take part of the revolution. Little did I know that my decision to play it by the rules would lead me to a place with far more subversive potential than any street rally.
