Reclaiming Optimism Through Critical Distance

Tonight is a night when I get lost on Wikipedia reading that Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick died in cancer at age 58 and I cry a little bit because she was such an awesome theorist and then I realize I am actually going to take a seminar with the other prolific affect theorist, Lauren Berlant, this spring, and I die a little death of happiness because of the excitement and the feeling in my gut that I’m closing in on a field that’s my own, that is expanding my mind and leaves me thinking that I wouldn’t wanna be in any other place, than where I am right now.
