Re-watching Southland Tales makes a lot more sense than the first time I watched it, partly because I have lived in the US a little over three years now and grasp far more of the details having been exposed to the craziness of this corporate state for much longer, but also because the world has become much more like the Southland than it was in 2008. I mean it’s almost like the creators of the SOPA and Protect IP Act studied the US-Ident for inspiration. And after spending the week with Chris Hedges dystopian “Empire of Illusion”, which is basically a meditation on how fucked up everything in our real world is, it feels like Southland reality will just become more and more relevant. Why I’m now trying to incorporate it into my paper on how “shit is fucked up and bullshit”, greatly inspired by Sam’s comment on the occupation of the fake Zucotti park.
